On March 16, 2010, Hoboken received two eco-friendly Gem Cars from Monmouth Vans, Access & Mobility Equipment. The two 100% electrical vehicles are replacing two old city trucks and being used to drive around Hoboken, put up signs, meterbags, and install and remove boots.
Costing $13,000 for the smaller model and $14,000 for the larger model, the eco-friendly cars are both environmentally friendly and a cheaper option for the City, with one regular truck costing approximately $27,000. After charging electronically for eight hours, the cars can drive up to 20 miles at a maximum speed of 25mph. The battery life of the cars is 2-3 years until they need to be replaced.
