We see an unsightly empty lot, carpeted with corona bottles, crushed cans, and other such lovely things. But to a true visionary, this empty lot is an amazing opportunity to create something truly beautiful.
Hoboken artist Rolando Ramos noticed such an unsightly vacant lot right outside his apartment on Jackson St. He was told that if he cleaned up this lot, it was his. So Ramos immediately saw this as a great opportunity to create a sculpture garden for the Hoboken community.
Ramos believes that a big part of the reason these areas are covered in trash and completely disregarded is because “the people don’t have anything beautiful to appreciate”. So he is aiming to give them just that.
There was a previous project that was very similar to this, during which ten artists produced sculptural work. Unfortunately the project fell through, and the work was never displayed. Ramos saw this as a great opportunity to give this work a place to be appreciated.
Ramos’ vision for this particular garden it to create a sophisticated atmosphere for people to come, dress up, appreciate the art, and enjoy it on a professional level. The event will also host acoustic musicians throughout the day. There is no admission fee, so all are welcome to come and enjoy this event. Ramos has made it very clear that this is not at all about him. It’s all about Hoboken. “I really want to give these people something to be proud of”, he says.
This display will start off as a one day event, this Saturday from noon to 8pm at 4th and Jackson. Ramos really wants to get a sense of how the public responds to this sort of event so that he can present more of these showings in the future. He says, “A Hoboken art garden is my ultimate goal”.
