Chasing her daughter around Pier A Park, you wouldn’t imagine that Bethany was an Assistant Principal! Lucky for us, she was able to catch her breath and offer some insight to us on how she handles juggling her full time job and spending time with her family.
Bethany has always been involved in the school atmosphere. She started off as a teacher, where she held the position for 7 years. She really didn’t have any complaints about the position. Bethany gradually began taking upon more administrative tasks, and found that she liked this too! All of her hard work definitely paid off when she was offered the position as Assistant Principal.
For four years, Bethany has held the Assistant Principal position. The requirements for Assistant Principal consists of credentials for both teaching and administrative positions. With 25 vacation days (plus sick days on top of that), Bethany says it’s great, because it allows for time to spend with her family.
Regarding her 2 1/2 year old daughter, Bethany’s favorite thing is her day to day activity. “She’s always coming up with new things,” says Bethany. “That’s what makes my day.” One day it could be the face she makes after asked to do something and the next day it’s the way she mispronounces a word. The only complaint that Bethany has is that there just isn’t enough time, in general. Between work and family time and alone time, 24 hours just isn’t enough!
A typical day for Bethany begins at 7:30 am, and she comes home from the office around 4:00 pm. While Bethany is at work, her daughter is under the watchful eye of three sitters. She has been rotating through them since she was 4 months old, and doesn’t seem to have much of a problem at all. This was a relief to Bethany, who admitted she was worried her daughter may not enjoy spending the day with the sitters as she got older.
When Bethany arrives home, her first priority - and favorite part of the day- is to play with her daughter. For a solid hour, hour and a half, they will play and laugh. After playtime, it’s dinner, bath, TV and bed. Her daughter goes to bed fairly easy, which is a huge relief.
Now it’s Bethany’s time to just relax. She and her husband will exchange stories from the day. A favorite topic is always the amusing things their daughter does, specifically the similarities they notice between her, and the two of them.
When asked if she had the opportunity to do anything else, what would it be, Bethany honestly did not know. She has always been involved in the school scene, and never really thought otherwise. She used to think she wanted to be a stay-at-home mom, but recently, she has decided that position is extremely difficult, and definitely would not want to do that.
Bethany wanted to leave you Square Mile city-goers with a few things:
Patience. Patience. Patience. Having just the right amount will help to make every day run a little smoother.
Don’t Sweat The Small Stuff. Things happen that aren’t planned, its just the nature of things. Don’t spend time worrying about it or you will most definitely be missing out on something more important.
Take Things In Stride. Do not to let anything impair your sense of normal, healthy living. Deal with it even though it is difficult or unpleasant without letting it bother or upset you.
