A friend to the children of Mile Square City, Murphy the Cat was also considered a “pet” to those who did not have a cat of their own. Living in the paw-print window of 9th and Hudson, Murphy the Cat provided Hoboken children with smiles and laughter.
Born on a farm in Pennsylvania, Murphy’s owners fell in love at first glance. She was picked from the liter and brought to her home here in Hoboken. Going from a barn cat in Pennsylvania to an adored window cat in Hoboken was a huge scenery change for Murphy, but she didn’t seem to mind.
If you have passed Murphy the Cat in the past few weeks, you have probably noticed something different; Murphy has posted a new note in the window. Murphy is heading on a road trip across the country, she is moving to California! She wrote thanking everyone who stopped by the window to say hi, and that she will miss everyone very much.
In the days following the first appearance of Murphy’s letter, more and more started to appear in the window. But these letters were not from Murphy; they were from various people in town who enjoyed visiting Murphy each day. Some wrote hoping that Murphy comes back to visit, others told Murphy that she will be missed.
At any given time, you could walk up 9th street, and low and behold, there would be a little kid calling Murphy to the window to say hi. But Murphy wasn’t only entertainment to young children; she brought smiles to the faces of adults, as well as the Stevens Institute of Technology students that pass her window on the way to and from campus and classes.
It’s funny how much of an impact one little cat can have on so many people. I think I speak for everyone in saying that Murphy the Cat, you will sincerely be missed by members of the Hoboken community, XOXO.
