It’s a pretty cool thing to say that this town was the birthplace of the very first recorded baseball game in history! We’ve come a long way since 1846, and it’s about time that the women of this town start making history! The Hoboken Softball Team (fingers crossed!) may just do that very soon!
April Bracero is one of the coaches of the Hoboken softball team, and they’ve had a pretty tough time getting what they desperately needed. The softball league here in Hoboken has faced some difficulties with getting adequate field time. Bracero reports, “In Hoboken, it's very sad to say that it's always about the boys. For us to get a field, it was always really hard. We always had to fight for what we wanted to get." But when the league finally became a part of the Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI), they began to see a lot more field time!
The league extends from girls ages 8-18, so many of these girls have been playing together for a long time. Such a tight knit group has created some truly unstoppable teams. With the extra field time the girls have gained, they have done exceptionally well and have now earned their spot in the RBI World Series! The girls will be traveling down to Palm Beach Gardens, FL to face off for the RBI Word Champions title. Their competition includes Philadelphia, Puerto Rico, Houston, Minneapolis, and Tampa.
Let’s wish them the best of luck, and look forward to these ladies making an exciting new historical mark for Hoboken!
