Today marks an impressive anniversary for the Hoboken Public Library (500 Park Ave.). Tonight the HPL celebrates its 120th year in existence with events lined up for kids, teens and adults alike.
In honor of this anniversary, the HPL is kicking off the celebration at 6PM with Florence Pape, a local actress (Hudson Theatre Ensemble) who will be portraying Nina Hatfield, the very first female librarian in Hoboken.
Following Pape is Stevens Institute of Technology Digital Archives librarian, Adam Winger, with a historical presentation about Stevens and another presentation about the library’s history by Reference librarian, Matt Latham.
To top the presentations off, the library will host a reception with cake for all.
Today is also the first day that HPL is taking submissions from kids to name the owl that perches on the building – its brand new mascot. Students in grades five-twelve will have the opportunity to name the owl, as well as create drawings for bookmarks that integrate the library’s slogan: “Owl C U @ HPL”. Two winners from three different age groups will be announced on 10/26 during a “Meet the Owl” program at 6:30PM which will also feature a live owl and hawk brought in by the Tenafly Nature Reserve.
Along with all of this, during the entire month of October the HPL wants to hear your most coveted library memories. Fill out a comment card and drop it in the box at the first floor circulation desk to be included on their website.
