No, not the ballet composed by Igor Stravinsky and choreographed by the great Vaslav Nijinsky nor the Angels and Airwaves tune on their 2007 album, I-Empire. Not even, brilliant as they were, the mid-80s D.C. posthardcore band. No, around here, it’s our little Mile Square trading its heavy layers for t-shirts and flip flops. It’s the First Street canopy coming into bloom and the sense of renewal and freedom that comes along with the entire transformation.
In this issue, we check out a few of what we think are the coolest spaces in town – a residence at the W, a penthouse bachelor pad, and the historic Elks Club. But after the winter we’ve had, no doubt, everyone is looking forward to taking a walk around without slipping and sliding! As you wander our streets, though, you might not realize that without the eccentric Colonel John Stevens and his family of entrepreneurs, inventors and benefactors, this city wouldn’t be what it is today. The Stevens family put this city on the grid, quite literally! Just in case your stroll makes you hungry, we introduce you to the gourmet food trucks that call Hoboken home. And of course, there are our usual Raves, Faces, and hNEWS, just to keep you in the loop on all the latest and greatest hereabouts. Personally, I want to thank the entire hMAG team for the honor of being the new editor, and I especially want to thank Chris Halleron for all that he has done to make hMAG, well, hMAG. I only hope I can continue his legacy with some part of his intelligence, humor and generosity. But not to worry – that Halleron wit will still be part of this publication. I’m delighted to say that he’s continuing on as our Contributing Editor.
We thank you for reading, we look forward to hearing from you, and we appreciate all you do to make Hoboken, well… Hoboken.
Gratefully yours,
Sharon Henry - Editor
& all of the hMAG Team
