Speech-language pathologist by day and event organizer by night, Alexis Karlene Walling makes an impact on peoples' lives from morning to night. Alexis has lived in Hoboken since June of 2009 and her presence in the community is ever-growing.
"I work full-time for a preschool and also for New Jersey’s Early Intervention System. My job is to evaluate and treat children with language disorders/delays, articulation, fluency, voice, and feeding/swallowing difficulties," Alexis explained, " But when I’m not doing speech-language therapy, I help organize events in Hoboken."
And organize events she does - working with the Hoboken Giants Fans, Hoboken New-in-Town and Hoboken Social Sandbox groups and hosting happy hours, fundraisers, comedy nights, dinners and more a few nights a week.
So how did Alexis get her start? "I have been planning, participating in, and hosting events since college." In fact, while studying speech-language pathology and audiology at Loyola College in Maryland, Alexis' extra-curricular activity count was more than impressive and explains why she's so good as an event organizer in Hoboken now.
"I was involved in many on-campus groups including student government, the alumni association, Alpha Phi Omega (a community service organization), and intramurals. I enjoyed planning events and participating in charitable fundraisers. I liked the feel of a small community and realized the importance of giving back to the community."
As busy as her pre-grad life was, Alexis' post-grad career proves just as eventful. Up by 5:30AM and at work by 7:30, a typical day for Alexis consists of seeing children for therapy and evaluations, completing paperwork, and privately seeing children for Early Intervention (which helps families meet the developmental and health needs of children with delays or disabilities). Back in Hoboken around 6PM, her day isn't over yet. "At this point I take care of necessary paperwork, go to the gym, or plan and host events. My day finishes around 11PM during the week or later on weekends."
You'll hear no complaints from Alexis, though. Even with a packed schedule with work and social planning, calling Hoboken home makes it all worthwhile.
"I’m lucky to live in a town where I can be close to my family, have my friends in my backyard, and be a hop, skip, and a jump to NYC."
Aside from its social scene and proximity perks, Alexis has a few other things in town that make the Mile Square even more exceptional.
From the Thanksgiving Turkey Wrap at 10th & Willow, to dining with a great view of New York at Trinity, to an original, 35-minute workout with Hoboken Bootcamps, Alexis has clear favorites in town.
Among her preferences, Alexis also lists off Solid Threads, Crumbs Bake Shop and Salon Caru. "I recently started going to Caru and Ryan has been amazing at making trendy suggestions for a great haircut and I love the creative t-shirts at Solid Threads!"
After work is done, Alexis does find time for herself to enjoy her hobbies which include reading, swimming, baking, and running. "In the last year, I started running 5Ks. I ran through the Lincoln Tunnel and through Yankee Stadium although I did get yelled at by Yankee security when I accidentally stepped on the grass on the field!"
From seeing a parent smile when their child says his or her first word or helping new people meet in town, Alexis has all the bases covered to be a Hobokenite that I, for one, am pretty proud to live among.
