Today's Bokenology brings us to the Wicked Wolf on a Wednesday night to speak with Trivia Master Casey Mizzone AKA "Mizz the Quiz". Casey, a local resident and Physical Education teacher at Elysian Charter School by day here in Hoboken discusses with me a little bit about the life of being a successful trivia MC here in the Mile Square City.
RC - How long have you been the Trivia MC at the Wicked Wolf?
CM - I started when the establishment opened in 2010. During the summer of 2010 I was studying Spanish in Belize all summer and one night was playing trivia at a local bar in Belize. I really enjoyed playing and wanted to play when I got home to Hoboken so I googled where to play and came across a job post on Craigslist looking for a Trivia MC. I went for the interview and brought some questions along and they gave me the job on the spot.
RC - How do you describe the crowd at the Wicked Wolf on trivia nights?
CM - We get a very loose crowd, not a lot of negativity. Your typical average joe plays here, as do the Steven's smarties and your young professionals. It's a good mix of people.
RC - How do you handle people who cheat?
CM - I constantly remind people throughout the night that cheating is not allowed. I tell people this is local trivia and not "Who Wants to be a Millionaire". When I find out someone is cheating or someone suspects cheating and brings it to my attention I tend to heckle them on stage by calling them out. I also encourage the other players to start boo'ing suspected cheaters and call them out. I also tell people that their are hidden cameras throughout the bar.
RC - What is the most memorable moment you've had while doing Trivia night?
CM - On one occasion a team entered and picked what I thought was the team name "The Rapists". I thought it was an odd name and for over an hour I kept reading out the team name "The rapists" during the standings or when reminding that team to turn in their answers. One of the managers came over to me and told me "The rapists are actually therapists". I just didn't read it right. The team was 4 middle aged women, I had egg on my face that night.
RC - Do people ever argue answers with you, tell you they are right and you are wrong?
CM - All the time!!! I call these people "The Vultures". I triple check all of my answers to make sure they are right. I tell people this is local trivia night and not a game show and to have fun and relax. Once a girl was so upset that she was told she had the wrong answer that she went on Yelp.com and left a very bad review of the trivia night / bar.
RC - Any memorable nights when asking your trivia questions?
CM - One night a guy gave me a $20 tip because I stumped him on a question. He was really cool about it and thought he had it right.
RC - Have any celebrities or notable people ever played trivia at the Wicked Wolf
CM - Yes. Zach Parise of the NJ Devils played one night with some of his friends and teammate Marc Fraser. That night he finished in 4th place out of 20 teams. While he is young and a great ice hockey player, he is a very smart guy.
RC - How do you choose your questions?
CM - I like to ask questions that everyone in attendance can answer. My questions range from brain benders that make the Stevens nerds have to really think to simple questions that the girl who only reads US Weekly while using an elliptical can answer.
RC - While working you must get hungry, what are the 3 best things in your opinion on the menu at the Wicked Wolf?
CM - The spinach artichoke dip is my favorite. The chicken quesadillas are great as is Dave Juice's special Hawaiian chicken wrap.
RC - What are 3 things you can't live without?
CM - (Thinking hard before he answers) A beard trimmer, nacho cheese sunflower seeds and a passport.
RC - If you could wish for 1 thing in Hoboken, what would it be?
CM - I would love to see more playing fields and more parks. There are too many swing sets going up in town . We have so many kids in this town and there is not many places for them to be active.
Trivia night at the Wicked Wolf is held every Wednesday from approximately 830pm to ?. Playing is free of charge and there are prizes for the top 3 teams. Throughout the night there are raffle prizes for those playing trivia and a contest that is ongoing each week where you can win an Apple iPad.
