Tonight from 7pm-10pm the Hoboken Homeless Shelter is joining hands with uptown restaurant City Bistro in a night to bring awareness and financial support to the shelter. Every year around this time the restaurant and shelter get together to hold one of several shelter fundraisers. Tonight's event is a suggested $25 donation at the door and will offer attendees 1/2 priced drinks and raffle prizes donated by local and nationally known businesses. 100 percent of the proceeds benefit the shelter and the event also acts as a great networking opportunity for young professionals and business owners in town.
The Hoboken Homeless shelter houses 50 residents every night. The shelter relies upon local support to keep the shelter running. Aside from housing residents the shelter offers those in need breakfast and dinners as well as support in helping those in need find jobs or acquire skills to perform jobs. The shelter accepts donation Monday - Friday from 9 am - 3 pm. Currently the shelter is in need of food items like cereal, coffee, milk, creamer, sugar, pasta sauces, canned goods, rice and instant potatoes. Toiletries needs are shampoos, soaps, toothpaste and brushes, underpants, deodorants, socks and razors. The shelter is also looking for detergents, plates, cups, napkins, garbage bags, pens, postage stamps and plastic utensils.
Hoboken residents are encouraged to volunteer at the shelter as well. Guest speaking engagements as well as help with general duties such as kitchen help, maintenance, clean up etc are much appreciated.
Each year the shelter puts together a few small fundraisers like this one and a giant end of year one which is held at Teak on the Hudson. The events are all spearheaded by Hoboken resident and Shelter committee member Todd Kinney. Todd along with his team of committee members go out of their way every year to ensure the shelter is well taken care of. Hours upon hours of volunteered time go in to making each one of these events a major success. Please if you attend the event tonight, find Todd or his teammates and shake their hand, it is community volunteers like them that make Hoboken such an awesome place to live and love.
If you have an item to donate to the raffle it may not be too late, please contact Todd Kinney at 201-323-0795 or email Todd at todd.kinney@yahoo.com. If you would like to volunteer at the shelter please call 201-656-5069.
