Sometimes all it takes is work to bring people to the great town of Hoboken. For Mr. Scott Jeffe, a smart, opinionated, and talkative soul, his work at an education marketing company is what drags him from his home in Queens, NY to Hoboken day after day. He’s been working here for the past two years, doing market research, a field he has been in for 15 years. Not only has he worked with many different colleges, (including that of yours truly), and has worked to help them better market themselves, he makes himself familiar with all the tricks of the trade- including fundraising for colleges and universities. Why does he do it? “Well, it’s what I’m good at it, even though I was a history major in college,” admits Scott. But, he likes his job, and hopefully plans to move up in his company; it makes sense, the knowledgeable, likeable way about Scott suggests quite a salesman indeed.
Although his job makes him peculiar in itself, how many people do you know that get to tell teachers what to do? Because Scott’s profession involves helping schools improve their reputations and just improve in general, he has a lot of experience in dealing with faculty and the like. Ironically enough, his favorite part about dealing with teachers on a regular basis is that, “I get to tell people [faculty] what they don’t want to hear, I like doing that- I like being the person that gets to tell them they should treat their students like customers.” Although this sounds like a weird perk, maybe Scott likes to be the voice of reason, and a good one at that. Though he says teachers are flabbergasted when they hear his advice, it does make sense- students are paying an extraordinary amount of money in return for knowledge. However, it is obvious that the student-teacher dynamic is quite different from the consumer-seller dynamic.
Another perk about Scott’s job is that he gets to travel all around the U.S. for different colleges and universities, enabling him to see much more of the Louisiana Purchase than most, “I’ve been to 45 states, I just have a few more to hit; I love to travel,” says Scott. One of the negatives of Scott’s job is the relentless long hours, yet when he comes home to relax in Queens he spends time taking care of his dogs, biking, reading, and enjoys photography. One of his favorite things about Hoboken is the waterfront, whether it’s sitting or walking, he loves the beautiful view- but who doesn’t? “My favorite place in Hoboken would have to be Oddfellow’s, the food there is just great, I love Cajun!” says Scott.
And while he loves Hoboken for its liveliness and cleanliness, he wishes there were more things to do on Washington Street in particular, “I wish there was more shopping, if there were more shops I’d be able to go out and get things done on my lunch break!” Though he must do his more extensive shopping in the city, he admits, “Life here is of a higher quality than in Manhattan.”
This opinionated, talkative, smart man from Queens also has one interesting fact , “I probably know more about the British Royal Family than anyone in New York, maybe it’s because I studied history and I studied abroad in London for a year. The most interesting part about being in England is that whenever a member of the royal family is supposed to be somewhere, the place, date, and time is all in the paper for the public to see!” Quite different from here!
