Lose the Training Wheels is an organization dedicated to teaching individuals with disabilities to ride a conventional two-wheel bicycle and become lifelong independent riders. This fast growing organization began with just one camp and one fleet of bikes in 1999 and has grown to 79 camps across the United States and in Canada in 2010.
Lose The Training Wheels travels all over North America, providing children with disabilities with the opportunity to learn, achieve, and gain confidence. They arrived in Hoboken on July 25the with the help of the Hoboken Family Alliance, attracting families from New York City and all over the surrounding area to experience the five-day camp. The camp spends five days teaching individuals how to ride a bicycle, and providing the children with confidence and a sense of achievement. According to losethetrainingwheels.org, more than “80% of participants that attend Lose The Training Wheels camps are able to balance on a two wheel bicycle by the end of the five days.” This is a remarkable accomplishment that provides children with confidence and assurance that is carried into other aspects of life as well.
The rapidly growing program is both inspiring and rewarding to be a part of. After just two days on the bikes the children were already making great improvement and seemed confident in themselves. Not only did the volunteers and parents want to help the children succeed, but the children wanted to help each other as well. Seeing the children cheering each other on and supporting one another was just amazing. From the moment we arrived until the end of the day you could feel excitement in the room. With the help of thousands of volunteers and families from across North America, Lose The Training Wheels has changed the lives of many individuals and families. Their location schedule can be found on their website at losethetrainingwheels.org
