This week's Bokenology brings us to the Chandelier Room located within the W Hotel here in Hoboken. Known for its breathtaking views of NYC and stylish interior, the Chandelier Room is one of Hoboken's hottest spots 5 days a week. Recently, I spoke with Chandelier Room general manager Darren Conway about the club. We chatted about Snoop D-O-Double G, David Blaine, the diverse crowd that comes to the Chandelier Room and more.
RC: Darren, how long have you been running the Chandelier Room?
Darren: I've been with the EMM Group since November 2008 and working on the CR since January 2009.
RC: Darren, can you share a little bit about the types of people that visit the Chandelier room? Does it seem like a lot of Hoboken people all the time or do you see people visiting the Chandelier Room from all over the metropolitan area?
Darren: The Chandelier Room is a diverse crowd of late 20 somethings to early 50 somethings. We have a lot of Hoboken regulars as well as tourists, hotel guests, guests from all over NJ and even New Yorkers.
RC: The interior decorating of the Chandelier Room is pretty amazing. Hanging chairs, lots of chandeliers, comfortable seating and so on. Who designed the club and what was the designer wanting to get across with the design of the Chandelier Room?
Darren: The Company that designed the space was ICrave. They have designed all of our venues from Abes $ Arthurs, SL Lounge to our newest restaurant in the MePa “ Catch.”
RC: I have been to the Chandelier Room on many occasions. Sometimes there is a wait and sometimes there is none. What are the busiest days and times?
Darren: We are open Tuesday to Saturday. Tuesdays, we host an after work happy hour party which caters to the local businesses in the area. Wednesdays, we host a trivia night. Thursday is very popular with the locals as we host an all night Happy Hour, which is always a busy night. Friday and Saturday are our busiest nights and table reservations are highly recommended.
RC: It seems like the Chandelier Room is constantly packed on most days, especially on weekends. I am sure you are working very hard but when it comes time to take a few minutes off, what do you do to regroup?
Darren: I honestly never stop to regroup lol. If I'm not working, I'm going out either in NYC or in Hoboken to check out other venues and to see what other establishments have going on. Networking is a huge part of my business and I do my best to get out and around town. Some Sundays I try to stay in, watch some games and lay on the couch and just relax but that’s only some Sundays.
RC: If you have a lot of downtime at the Chandelier Room what do you do to keep yourself occupied?
Darren: There's not a lot of downtime as we are always looking ahead for what we can do next - from events to performances, etc. We try to stay ahead of the game and keep the wheels in motion.
RC: What is your favorite kind of music to listen to while you work? I hear a lot of R & B and house music when I go, so I have to assume you like both of those, do you? And when you are home what do you listen to?
Darren: I like all genres of music and often my staff is shocked at some of the songs I sing when in the office. Growing up, my dad listened to Jim Croce, Alabama etc. My mom was a huge fan of Rod Stewart, The Beatles and the Stones. And growing up I was always into all types of music. Nowadays I’m all ears, I like everything.
RC: You have one of the cutest dogs in Hoboken. What is his or her name and would you mind telling us about him or her? Does he or she do anything that really makes you smile? Does he or she know any tricks? Perhaps share a picture of your dog with us?
Darren: My dog is the best, her name is Zoey and she is a purebred Boston Terrier. She has a great personality and can be a little hyper at times. She’s very affectionate which I love. Nothing like coming home to her after a long night at work and her getting all excited to see me; definitely puts a smile on my face.
RC: Over the last year I have seen a lot of famous people make appearances and throw parties at the Chandelier Room. In addition, the W routinely has professional sports teams stay at the hotel. Major League Soccer, NFL and NBA teams to name a few. Of all the people with celebrity status, who did you enjoy the most having in the Chandelier Room and can you share your experience with my readers?
Darren: For our one year anniversary party we had Snoop Dog perform and after the show he invited us to hangout with him and a few of his friends. One of his friends was magician David Blaine and he asked if we were interested in seeing some card tricks. Snoop, Michael Barry (one of the hotel owners) and myself. I was totally amazed at his illusions. I mean I've seen some of his TV show specials and thought it's definitely TV cameras making those tricks look so good. But when you actually see it in person, it's definitely real and Blaine is absolutely the real deal.
RC: On weekends, it seems like there is always a line to get in. In fact all over Hoboken on weekends there are a lot of places that have lines. What is the best advice you can give someone who wants to come and will likely not have to wait long? What is the secret?
Darren: The real secret is to be polite, well-dressed and confident when approaching the doorman. No one likes to be addressed “Hey Yo.” And definitely don’t offer the doorman money, very tacky. And if you're going to say you know someone who works here, please make sure you do. I had a patron tell me he knew Darren and that he was gonna text him to let him in, when in fact he was talking to me and obviously had no idea that I was Darren. Awkward but funny.
RC: Hoboken clubs in general are in my opinion playing basic dance music and hip hop that we hear on the radio. In NYC there are a variety of clubs that play more traditional house music, minimal and techno. Do you think if a club was to open in Hoboken that tailored to only true house/techno, would it succeed or is Hoboken just not the right option for a club of this nature?
Darren: Hoboken is a diverse group of people so I'm sure something like that would work.
RC: Does the Chandelier Room offer food for sale or is it drinks only?
Darren: Yes, we offer a light tapas style bar menu that consists of artisanal pizzas, tuna tartare tacos, risotto balls etc. All food is prepared by Zylo.
RC: Who do you root for in sports?
Darren: Huge Yankees fan, since my cousins brainwashed me to hate the Mets at the age of 5. My first baseball memorabilia was a signed 8 x 10 plaque of Don Mattingly. I still have it to this day
