A feast for the ears on what would otherwise be a typical fall Sunday. The second annual hMAG music fest kicked off with the sounds of some of the best local talent around including Christina Alessi, who sang with soul, said a few of the fans in the audience.
There were many highlights of the day, but we started things off at Kangaroo Jones’ warm up session in the hMAG office in Hoboken. When the band took the stage early afternoon, the horns provided a dramatic backdrop to the typical rock scene.
Lead singer Brian Riback, who is an original founding member of Kangaroo Jones, provided a heartfelt moment of the show when he asked his dad Steven to join him on the stage for a cross generation concert. He recalls growing up and learning to appreciate his father’s passion.
“Growing up, most boys had baseball, we had music,” said Riback.
Steven used to play the saxophone in the Catskills, said Brian, who added, “There is nothing like hearing him play,” he said.
He typically doesn’t like outdoor concerts because of his allergies, but this show was an exception, he said.
Things heated up as 7Mornings took the stage mid-afternoon. Fresh off their recording stint in LA, their sound was polished and moving. A real local favorite, they pleased the crowd with hits from their EP “Hurry Up and Wait” including the powerful “Set Fire” and “Still Standing.”
Johnny Miller, lead guitarist and singer for 7Mornings, thought the show was awesome and can’t wait for a bigger and better show next year.
“The scenery, the stage, the sound, there is nothing like it. I think it was great,” Miller said. “I want it to be a bi-annual event.”
As the sun has set on the hMAG music fest, we close out with none other than the Walkmen. Until next year Hoboken, keep on rockin!
