In the mile square city we know as home there are so many people doing great things for others. From those that do great things when no one else is looking to Batman and Robin, Hoboken sure has great residents. Jerry Needel and his wife Jaime, along with PSU football blogger Adam Collyer, all Hoboken residents, joined forces right after the news broke about Jerry Sandusky allegedly molesting children on campus. Head coach Joe Paterno of the Penn State football team reportedly knew of the allegations and did nothing about it in hopes of preserving the integrity of the team.
What was simply a few alumni getting together trying to raise $500,000 became an overnight success, helped in large part by social media and appearances on national television from networks like ABC and MSNBC. Needel says "After seeing the tragic events at penn state, we felt compelled to act - to put the focus back on the victims and help make sure this never happens again everywhere. By doing so, we hope to also help Penn State get its pride back. I asked a few fellow alumni, including my wife Jaime, to join me in making a difference, and we are blown away by the progress. Over $378,000 raised in 5 days from nearly 10,000 donors - largely through social media. Tons of media appearances. And most importantly, we are seeing the results - traffic to RAINN.org abuse hotline is up over 40% since we began our campaign, they have doubled their ability to recruit volunteers and we have reached over 6 million people through social media on the topic of preventing sexual abuse. I am proud of, thankful for and in awe of the movement that has begun." Needel runs www.proudtobeapennstater.com, a website that was created to raise awareness of the Penn State University tragedy. According to the site there are 557,000 PSU alumni and Needel and his team were in hopes to get each person to donate $1 to reach the goal, a goal that as of today is likely met or has surpassed.
In Washington D.C. national non profit agency RAINN, which raises money for abused children all over the world was on board to help the Hoboken residents raise funds. According to Katherine Hull, VP of Communications at Rainn "Over $410,000 raised to help survivors through the National Sexual Assault Online Hotline, accessible via rainn.org (Live update can be found on the campaign landing page: http://www.rainn.org/ProudPSUforRAINN. There is a 54% increase in Online Hotline usage (over a double increase from the previous month) - helping survivors nationwide take the first steps towards recovery (Women and Men, boys and girls). #ProudPSUforRAINN Tweets have reached an audience of over 7.3 million twitter followers. Over 10,245 Penn State supporters have signed the e-petition on rainn.org. Over 139,000 people are now more educated about sexual abuse recovery & prevention from rainn.org. 395 have signed up for RAINN volunteer opportunities in their local communities".
Adam Collyer, who had a massive role in the fundraiser writes what many consider the largest Penn State University football blog www.blackshoediaries.com. On the site PSU fans can get daily up to date news, stats and depth charts for all things PSU related, all wrote by Adam. Needel also credits alumni member Bob Troia (class of 1995) and Larena Lettow (class of 1998) with making the fundraiser a huge success. Incredibly after the charity hit the news waves, students and alumni from many universities across the country came together and donated money to the cause. Needel credits University of Nebraska and Michigan State university students, alumni and faculty as 2 of the major contributors to the success of the charity. Hoboken residents that are alumni or not are encouraged to visit http://www.rainn.org/ProudPSUforRAINN to donate or learn more about the efforts of these Hoboken residents that have come together to help those in need.
