This week’s Bokenology features Larry from DC’s Tavern, one of Hoboken’s last dive bars. The bar combines no frills with complete eccentricity in a way that would be difficult to pull off if you tried. That is the rare beauty of this bar; it is just effortlessly cool with a ton of screaming personality. The bar combines 50s themed memorabilia on the walls with a punk rock edge behind the bar and southern rock and blues on the jukebox. I spoke to bartender Larry the Hunter to find out if staff members are as appealing and cool as the bar itself… thankfully they are!
HT: How long have you worked at DC’s?
Larry: 10 years
HT: How did you get into bartending?
Larry: I joined a band in New York City and a fellow band member opened up the bar and asked me to bartend.
HT: Do you have a specialty drink?
Larry: No, just beer! There is nothing muddled or fancy here. We ran out of cherries four years ago and never bought another jar!
HT: Has anyone ever tried to tip you in anything other than cash?
Larry: Yes! But I don’t know if I can say… I will keep it PG13 and say home made pickles.
HT: If you could have any three people sit at the bar, who would they be?
Larry: Jimmy Hendrix, John Belushi and Abraham Lincoln.
HT: Do you know any cool bar tricks?
Larry: This is not one of those bars!
HT: What type of music keeps you going?
Larry: Southern Rock, Blues and whatever is on the jukebox as it is pretty eclectic and mixed up.
HT: What is your favorite bar game to play with your customers?
Larry: Drinking is not a game!
HT: What is your favorite thing about bartending at DC’s?
Larry: The loyal regulars
HT: What makes this bar different from other bars in Hoboken?
Larry: It is a dive bar where you can relax, everyone is welcome from all walks and ages of life, and we are here for everyone that gets it!
HT: Tell me three words to describe DC’s
Larry: Good clean fun!
