On my first visit to Germany I found it odd to share a table with strangers. A few beers later, I found myself wishing restaurants back home would adopt the same policy. There is a certain kind of intimacy that is fostered over sharing space, particularly when you throw liquor into the mix.
The Biergarten embraces this theory with long wooden tables. The large hall has a festival like atmosphere, particularly when it’s packed. It’s a great place to kick back, enjoy a stein of beer, and meet your neighbor, who might be elbowing you for space!
On a recent visit, my friends and I sampled a number of their imported ales and stuffed ourselves on the Bavarian Soft Pretzel, which comes with homemade mustard and spicy liptauer cheese. Served hot, the large pretzel is a salty sensation, perfect with any number of beers. Did I mention, everything is big here? You can also get a man-sized portion of smoked kielbasa that takes up half the plate. But whatever size appetite you have - leave your inhibitions at the door! Your table mates might end up as friends.
