This week’s Bokenology takes us to Marty O’Brien’s, 94 Bloomfield St. As anyone can confirm from wandering the downtown area on a weekend night- downtown is a fun place to be! And who better to have that fun with then two of O’Brien’s real superstars- Gina and Dina (collectively known as the “Inas”). These ladies promise to entertain you on weekends and not just with their cocktail skills. The two ladies are quick with a drink and conversation. O’Brien’s offers great food on their bar menu all the time, including my personal favorite- the open faced steak sandwich. But whatever your appetite, the “Inas” will chase away whatever ails you!
DS: How long have you two worked in the bar business?
Gina: Five years.
Dina: Four years. I started as a hostess and then they moved me behind the bar.
DS: What is the best part of your job?
Gina: I like that I don’t have to wake up early every day. And of course the social aspect of it. Meeting people I wouldn’t normally meet. But really, not waking up early is great!
Dina: We laugh the entire time we are working. As long as we are making people laugh and they are coming back, then I’m happy.
Gina: It really is a comedy show.
DS: What is the strangest thing you’ve ever seen?
Dina: Superheroes in the bar. They came in and rescued me from a bad man!
DS: Which superheroes?
Dina: Flash and Robin. It was the weirdest and coolest thing that ever happened.
DS: What did the man do?
Dina: He was being inappropriate and trying to take pictures.
DS: How do you prepare for your night?
Dina: we get ready at my store – Dina’s Kiss & Makeup. We blast music and put on our makeup. Then we come in guns a blazing.
DS: Best night so far?
Gina: Every Saturday night is awesome because our friends come in.
Dina: Every Saturday night we dance on the bar and give out shots!
DS: Have you witnessed any life changing experiences here?
Gina: This guy came here after Hurricane Katrina. His whole world was turned upside down. He was relocated here because he couldn’t stay where he was. But he still came in with a smile on his face every single day.
DS: So who came up with the nickname of the “Inas” for you two?
Gina: DJ Watts. When people say our name like that, we respond to it.
DS: Best Drink?
Dina: Everyone always asks for my peanut butter and jelly shot.
Gina: My dirty martini.
DS: Who are your typical customers?
Dina: We have a lot of locals that come in, but they are really like family.
Gina: We do have locals, but we also have strangers who come in and end up staying.
DS: What makes them stay?
Dina: We are just fun.
Gina: It’s probably sad that we think we are fun!
Dina: Our goal is to make people happy and to have fun!
DS: Do you have any advice for customers?
Gina: I think it’s about being respectful.
Dina: Buy us a shot of Jameson and you will be taken care of. Don’t wave money at us.
