This week’s Bokenology takes us to 1Republik, 221 Washington St. Located in the heart of Hoboken, this sports bar gets plenty of activity during the week and of course, on weekends.
This relatively new bar is glittery with action from the plasma TVs and signature red lights hanging from the ceiling. In addition to the sports action, they offer daily happy hour specials, plus weekly specials like their Margarita Tuesdays and Ladies Night on Wednesdays. One of the focal points is the center island bar. So it should be no surprise that they have a good looking staff. What better way to entice customers to stay a little longer? One such staff member is the unforgettable Rory. She’s pretty; she’s sassy and seriously funny. She took a few moments to talk shop about what she’s seen.
DS: How long have you worked here?
Rory: Since November 8, 2010 – opening day.
DS: How long have you been bartending?
Rory: Since before you were born!
DS: What do you like best about it?
Rory: The amazing and not so amazing people I meet on a regular basis.
DS: What is the strangest thing you’ve ever seen at any bar in town?
Rory: People trying to get out from behind a curtain – thinking there is a door there. Or the amount of times I’ve seen someone pull the door towards them here and end up with their face in the window. (The door pushes out!)
DS: What is the most life affirming thing you’ve ever witnessed?
Rory: I kind of think everyday. Everyday, I hear something about someone’s random act of kindness. I always try to hear someone else’s story. It’s the simple things that brighten your day. This guy Brandon who I work with, I found out that he gave his brother a kidney and didn’t tell anyone. Everyday you can look for something nice. It puts everything into perspective.
DS: Name one thing you’ve learned bartending.
Rory: No matter who you are, or who the other person is, you should demand and get respect. Unless you prove to me otherwise!
DS: Best drink you make?
Rory: Probably my Pink Lemonade Martini. But typically, if someone says, ‘I don’t know what shot I want,’ I pour them a shot of Jameson.
DS: What was your best night here so far?
Rory: I had a lot of fun here last Thanksgiving. It was the first Thanksgiving we were ever open. We cooked a turkey here for the whole staff.
DS: How do you usually prepare for a night of work?
Rory: I usually just play with my dog before I come to work. That puts me in a good mood.
DS: What’s good about this place?
Rory: We are not just a sports bar. We offer a NYC club atmosphere. Plus, the bartender’s rock!
DS: What advice would you give a 21-year-old going out?
Rory: Never touch your bartender! Just have manners. Remember the manners your mother taught you!
