This week’s Bokenology takes us to Mulligan’s Pub, 159 First St. This cozy bar is best known for soccer, of course, coming at you live all hours of the day. There is a real neighborhood feel to this place and many of the regulars are locally known on First Street and throughout Hoboken. This is the bar to go to when you want to escape the tourists who flock to Hoboken on weekends. The charm of this place is primarily the friendly staff. Recently, I spoke with one such notable bartender, namely Will. That’s right ladies, just Will. He might be charming, but please don’t call him Billy. At least not if you want a drink!
DS: How long have you been working at Mulligan’s?
Will: Four years. I used to work in advertising, but I quit that job. Then I decided I better get another job before it’s ‘Hello Mom and Dad, Will’s back in town!’
DS: What's the best part of your job?
Will: Yelling at people. Or, working with my best friends.
DS: What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever seen? Like someone falling asleep at the bar.
Will: Oh, that happens all the time! Well, someone tried to pee in the corner.
DS: What’s the nicest thing you’ve ever witnessed?
Will: A friend of mine proposed to his ‘now’ fiancé. They met here.
DS: Has someone ever come in here who changed your thinking for the night?
Will: People on St. Patrick’s Day teach me how not to act. And that I hate whistles. And Miley Cyrus taught me how to love and how to party in the USA.
DS: Do you get hit on a lot? What do you tell the ladies?
Will: I usually ask them what their favorite episode of Star Wars is - and they usually walk away!
DS: What do you do during the day?
Will: I go to school for physical therapy.
DS: How do you prepare for your night?
Will: I take a shower. Watch the Soup. Get a cup of coffee from La Isla, say hi to my friends at Swigs and I go to work.
DS: What is the best drink that you make?
Will: I pour a spectacular shot of Jameson!
DS: How would you describe the crowd here?
Will: There is an international crowd here, a lot of regulars – lots of good people. There is something for everyone at Mulligan’s.
DS: What advice would you give a 21-year old going out on the town?
Will: Don’t go chasing waterfalls.
